Learning has become a habit for me. I have been spending my time for about two/three hours every weekend to learn a course in Coursera since 2018 (nizam’s coursera progress) and an hour in weekdays to learn English in ABA English since five months ago.

“Nizam, if you want to be successful, you must push yourself to learn during the first three years of your career”. -Benny Riadi.

Data Engineering is broad, and the tools for each company is different, their needs and purposes to process the data are different. The habit of learning has become an advantage when there are new things (e.g. data processing tools, table design and ELT workflows) that have to be implemented in the data infrastructure, it becomes easier for me.

When there is no senior in the company, and the company doesn’t need to hire them, learning from the courses also help me to get the knowledge to standardize the skills. Some people say “the best way to learn is from the senior.” but at one point I realized, you can not expect them (the senior) to transfer all their knowledge. You still need to learn by yourself.

“I want to learn, but I have never finished the course because it was boring, I have no time, I have a lot of distractions.”

I wrote these sentences after my first month trying to learn. The few tips that i want to share with you in the first several months of learning are;

  1. Observing the course that you like, reviewing the syllabus also helps. If it didn’t fit your expectations then leave it.
  2. Specifying the date and time to learn (e.g. in the weekend before lunch for two hours.).
  3. Always set your cell-phone/laptop on don’t disturb mode, do not check anything during your learning, and keep your focus.

I hope my tips could help you to start learning something new. You must keep on being curious about your expertise. It will trigger you to learn.
